Base the depth on a tape-measure number from your specific site, not a generic rule. Ottawa clay, sandy southern Ontario soil, exposed corners, gates, and taller privacy sections do not place the same load on a post. When Deeper Posts Are Worth the Extra Dig

Probe the wood with a screwdriver where it meets soil or concrete. Sound wood resists the tip. Soft, darkened wood indicates decay, even if the section above grade still looks acceptable.


For limited damage, cut the post above the decay and reinforce it with a repair bracket or splint designed for the load. If decay reaches the rail connections or the remaining wood can't hold fasteners, replace the post rather than hiding the damage behind a new collar.


Leaning


Push the post by hand and watch whether the soil moves around it or the entire footing shifts. Check plumb on two faces, then inspect the gate, rails, and panel for the load that may have started the movement.


A leaning post usually needs to be pulled and reset, with the hole extended roughly 2 inches deeper than the failed installation where site conditions allow.
